KERRVILLE, Texas -- A large second half push aided the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team in a 78-60 win over Schreiner University on Thursday night at the Edington Center. Senior forward #Kerrie Carter# paced the Tornados (7-9, 5-7 ASC) with 12 points and 15 points against her former team.
Carter spent two seasons at Schreiner (0-15, 0-12 ASC) prior to transferring to Concordia.
The busy hands of the Concordia defense, led by freshman guard #Margaret Milling#'s eight steals, racked up 16 total steals in the win. Milling added a career-best 16 points and eight assists for the Tornados. Freshman guard #Julia Bellquist# also scored 16 points to tie for the team lead.
CTX held a 36-32 lead at halftime. In the second half, Concordia opened the game by going on a 14-4 run (50-36). A huge run by the Mountaineers saw the Tornados lead dwindle to one point (52-51) with 8:38 remaining. Bellquist answered with a three-pointer to push the lead back to four (55-51). She struck again two possessions later with another three (58-51). Freshman guard #Brianna Smith# increased CTX's lead to nine (60-51) with 5:48 to play.
The Tornados extended their lead to double digits as Milling knocked down a jumper (64-53). Concordia would not look back in the final three minutes as the Tornados would cruise the rest of the way.
Freshman post #Skylar Lott# posted her second career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Smith finished with 12 points, while senior forward #Jackie Eddins# netted 10.
Concordia shot 51% (25-of-49) from the floor in the contest, which included the team shooting at a 50% clip (4-of-8) from behind the three-point line.
Schreiner shot just 30.7% (23-of-75) from the field. The Mountaineers heaved up 33 total attempts from beyond the three-point line, making just eight (24.2%).
Candi Althaus led Schreiner with 14 points.
The Tornados will attempt to win three in a row for the first time this season as they host Texas Lutheran University on Sat., Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. in Concordia Fieldhouse.
