AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia University Texas women's basketball team suffered an 83-70 setback to visiting Texas Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon at Concordia Fieldhouse.
The Tornados (7-10, 5-8 ASC) were unable to sustain a hot start to the contest, which saw Concordia bust out to a 15-8 lead. 10 of the Tornados' first 15 points came off layups.
Texas Lutheran (9-7, 8-5 ASC) rode the hot shooting hand of Pearl Kafoa to overtake Concordia. Kafoa scored the first eight points for the Bulldogs. By halftime, Kafoa had 12. She finished the contest with a game-high 21.
Concordia trailed by six at halftime (45-39). The Tornados were able to pull within one (55-54) with 13:51 left in the game. However, TLU extended their lead to 13 points behind the strength of a 14-2 run. Later in the half, the Bulldogs would lead by as much as 15 (72-57). Concordia would cut into the lead, knocking it to seven (74-67), but TLU would push the lead out of reach.
The Tornados committed 33 turnovers which limited their chances on offense.
Freshman guard #Brianna Smith# led CTX with 17 points. Senior forward #Kerrie Carter# and freshman guard #Julia Bellquist# each chipped in with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Freshman guard #Margaret Milling# racked up seven points, seven assists and five steals in the loss.
Candace Mitchell had a double-double for Texas Lutheran, scoring 11 points and collecting 10 rebounds.
Concordia will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 28 in a road contest at Hardin-Simmons University. Tip time in Abilene is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
