AUSTIN, Texas -- Three 10th-inning runs by Houston Baptist University allowed the Huskies (2-5) to outlast the Concordia University Texas baseball team, 7-4, on Friday night at Nelson Field. Junior catcher #Russell Johns# paced Concordia (6-7) with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs batted in.
With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Concordia was threatening to claim a win with a pair of runners on base with only one out. However, pinch hitter #Alec Carter# popped a foul ball down the third base line that was grabbed by HBU's Robbie Buller. He then fired the ball over to Derek Smith at second base to complete a double play as #Michael Bogard# was unable to get back in time.
Momentum shifted to the visitor's dugout as the Huskies capitalized in the top of the 10th inning. With one out, pinch hitter Josh Gonzales reach on a fielding error by the Tornados. Viron Hackney followed that up with a double to right field, sending Gonzales to third base. Kolby Arnst immediately followed that up with a single into center field, which plated both Gonzales and Hackney, giving Houston Baptist a 6-4 lead. Two batters later, Paul Prestera tripled to right field, giving HBU a 7-4 lead before the top half of the inning was ended.
Concordia would not go quietly in the home half of the 10th. After loading the bases with two outs, Bogard grounded out to the HBU second baseman to finish off the contest.
A scrappy CTX team fought back from a 4-1 deficit to knot the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on a RBI single by #Bucky Bryant#.
Bryant, Johns and Bogard all registered two hits to lead Concordia.
#Jason Rangel# was saddled with the loss for Concordia after giving up three runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits in three innings of relief. #Ben Whiteley# earned another no-decision after tossing seven innings, while yielding four runs and five hits. He struck out four in the contest and gave up five free passes.
Stephen Nikonchik earned the win in relief for HBU after hurling four and two-thirds innings. He gave up one run and scattered five hits.
The two teams will get back after it on Saturday in a doubleheader at Nelson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
