AUSTIN, Texas -- Several big innings by Houston Baptist University led to a three-game sweep over the Concordia University Texas baseball team on Saturday at Nelson Field. The Huskies (4-5) defeated the Tornados (6-9) 9-0 and 15-5 in a doubleheader on Saturday.
Concordia struggled in the first game at the plate. #Justin Beasley# was the only Tornado to reach base in the seven-inning game. Beasley singled twice and earned a base on balls.
The Huskies plated six runs in the fourth inning and three more in the seventh. Concordia used five pitchers in the contest. #Russell Johns# was credited with the loss after allowing four runs in one-third of an inning. Johns came on to pitch the fourth inning and proceeded to hit three batters and give up a hit before being replaced.
In the nightcap, Houston Baptist jumped out to an 11-1 lead after plating runs in each of the first four innings, capped off by a seven-run fourth inning. The Tornados showed some life in the bottom of the sixth as CTX scored three runs, capped off by a two-run homer to right field by #Justin Yeager#.
HBU would go on to score four more runs, while Concordia scratched across one more in the contest.
CTX starting pitcher #Steven Peterson# took the loss, pitching three innings and allowing four runs.
The Tornados will return to action on Fri., Mar. 12 as American Southwest Conference season begins with a three-game series at Howard Payne University in Brownsville.
