AUSTIN, Texas --
The 2010 Concordia University Texas men's golf team has done something that no other team in program history has achieved.  The Tornados, led by head coach Greg Sigler, have qualified for the American Southwest Conference Golf Championships.  CTX is the fifth seed in a nine-team field and will compete in the 54-hole tournament at Ram Rock Golf Course on Horseshoe Bay Resort.

The Tornados' five-man squad is made up of one senior and four freshman.  Senior transfer #Michael Goldwater# leads the Tornados into the event, a player who is no stranger to the big stage.  As a former NCAA Division I player at UTEP, Goldwater qualified for the Western Athletic Conference and NCAA West Regional golf championships.  Goldwater's assault on the Concordia record books is unrelenting.  In his one season, the Austin, Texas, native has claimed four single-season marks.  His 76.82 scoring average is the best single-season average in Concordia history.  His national ranking of 182 is the highest ranking ever achieved by a Tornado golfer.

Though it is a senior leading the way, Concordia's freshmen have been the key to consistent success this season.  The Tornados' four-man freshman class ranks second in the country, according to Golfstat's "Freshman Class Impact Ranking."  #Eddie Diaz de Leon#, #Justin Muraida#, #C.J. Caliendo# and #J.D. Heathcoat# make up the seventh-best freshman class in all three of the NCAA divisions.

Diaz de Leon posted the best round in Concordia history earlier this week, becoming the first Tornado to ever card an under par round.  Diaz de Leon shot a one-under par 71 in the final round of the West Region Invitational at Teravista Golf Course in Georgetown on Tuesday, April 13.

The Tornados face a tough task in Ram Rock Golf Course, beginning on Sunday, April 18.  Concordia, along with the other teams, will have one practice round before teeing off on Monday morning in the 54-hole event.  Though Concordia has attended a conference championship in the past, this is the first time the program has qualified since the ASC required teams to meet the qualification policy.

Interviews with Sigler, Goldwater and Diaz de Leon about the event can be viewed below.
