GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Concordia University Texas men's basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Trinity University 81-72 at the Southwestern University/Trinity University Classic Sunday afternoon in the Robertson Center. #Brad Walker# paced CTX (3-6, 1-4 American Southwest Conference) with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the non-conference win. Walker also recorded his 500th career rebound in the win, becoming the sixth player in Concordia history to collect at least 500 rebounds.
The Tornados trailed the Tigers (2-5) at the half 32-41. Trinity came out and pushed the lead to 12 as Ryan Beall scored led a quick 5-2 run to start the half. CTX began to battle back, cutting the lead in half (40-46) with 15:37 left.
After Trinity stretched the lead back to nine points, #Larry Durand# buried a three-pointer from the corner to bring the Tornados again within six (43-49). A 9-4 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes would pull Concordia within one point (52-53) as Walker hit a pair of free throws. Trinity would again push the lead back to three but CTX answered again as Durand hit another three to tie the game (55-55) with 11:48 left.
The Tornados would claim its first lead of the second half (59-58) as #Nick Haynes# netted a three-pointer from the wing. CTX would not trail again the rest of the contest. Concordia would push its lead to as much as nine in the second half, completing the 18-point second-half swing.
CTX started off the game hot, scoring the first 10 points of the contest. Concordia's largest lead of the game was 11 points (26-15) with 7:35 left in the first half. Trinity took its first lead at the 4:21 mark in the first half (29-31).
Durand and #Reza Farahani# joined Walker in double digits by scoring 11 each. #Jon Hutton# netted nine, including seven in the first half. Hutton also collected seven rebounds.
Freshman post #Steven Bob-Nabena# came off the bench to score five points and grab five rebounds.
Heath Hopson led Trinity with 15 points on four-of-seven shooting from the field, including two-of-four from behind the arc and five-of-seven at the free throw line.
The Tornados will receive a 14-day break before returning to action in 2010. CTX will travel to the University of Texas-Tyler on Jan. 3 to resume ASC action.
