SEGUIN, TX- Concordia Texas baseball split their Saturday double header against Texas Lutheran University at Katt-Isbel Field. The Bulldogs took game one 2-1 and Concordia came back to take game two 3-2.
Texas Lutheran finished the series taking 2 of 3 games from Concordia in American Southwest Conference (ASC) action. Concordia Texas is now 10-8 overall with a 1-2 ASC record while, TLU improves to 12-6 overall and 2-1 ASC.
In game one the game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when
Chad Thielepape hit an RBI single scoring
Patrick Mercer to give Concordia their sole run of the contest.
The Bulldogs, Ryan Nokelby hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to give TLU the 2-1 victory.
Michael Johnson was awarded his first loss of the season after allowing six hits and six strikeouts for the Tornados.
In game two, Tornado starter
Ben Whiteley threw a one-hitter over seven innings striking out four while allowing only one unearned run in the 3-2 Concordia victory.
Texas Lutheran scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first before
Colin Lippert drove in the first run for the Tornados in the top of the second inning scoring
Justin Beasley, who led off by being hit by a pitch.
The Tornados took the lead in the fifth after
Patrick Mercer's sacrifice bunt put
Micah Runnels in scoring position for
Tom Williams who drove in Runnels off a fielders choice.
Concordia took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth with an insurance run off a Mercer RBI double.
Stephen Szkotak recorded his third save of the year and Whiteley improved to 2-1.
Concordia will be back in action on March 10th as they travel to San Antonio to take on Trinity University in non-conference action. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.
