AUSTIN, Texas --The Concordia University Texas men's basketball team overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat visiting Texas Lutheran University, 85-74, on Saturday afternoon at Concordia Fieldhouse. Four Tornados (10-7, 8-5 ASC) scored double digits, led by freshman guard #Nick Haynes#, who poured in 18.
Texas Lutheran (5-12, 3-10 ASC) had led by as much as 11 points in the first half, but the Tornados were able to cut the lead to seven at halftime (40-33). The Tornados turned up the pressure in the second half. CTX went on to shoot 60.7% (17-of-28) in the second half to put up 52 points and overcome the early TLU lead. The Tornados hot shooting extended beyond the three-point arc in the second half, where the team hit 55.6% (5-of-9) from downtown.
Overall, Concordia shot 48% (12-of-25) from behind the three-point line.
Haynes and junior guard #Jon Hutton#, a transfer from Texas Lutheran, each hit four three-pointers for Concordia. Hutton ended up with 17 points. Haynes and Hutton led Concordia's bench with 35 combined points. The Tornados bench outscored the Bulldogs bench, 49-18.
Concordia turned their seven-point halftime deficit into a 13-point second half lead with 2:58 remaining.
Senior forward #Brad Walker# and senior guard #Brian Elarms# also registered double digits for the Tornados, scoring 15 and 13, respectively. Elarms buried three three-pointers, while Walker dished out six assists and had four blocked shots. Walker scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half.
Henry Flores led Texas Lutheran with 28 points. Brad Howard led all players with 11 rebounds, including 10 in the first half.
The Tornados, who have now won eight of their last nine games and four straight, will travel to Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday, Jan. 28. Tip time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Abilene.
