Clinton, Miss. –
Domonique Liddell posted her first career double-double, but the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team dropped a 51-45 decision to Mississippi College on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Tornados had their nine-game winning streak against American Southwest Conference teams snapped.
Concordia (4-2, ASC 2-1) scored the first three points of the game by getting a jumper from
Brianna Smith and a free throw from Liddell, but Mississippi College responded by rattling off nine straight points. Valeri Stewart netted seven during the stretch, which was capped by draining a 3-pointer.
Mississippi College (5-2, ASC 2-1) continued to stay in control and built up its lead to 17 points at 25-8 when Whitney Enis nailed a 3-pointer with 6:53 on the clock. The Choctaws did not allow the Tornados to make a field goal for a span of 13:19 until Liddell finished a pass from
DJ Vallier with 6:24 left to play in the half that made it 25-11, and
Voneshia Williams made a layup to create a 29-22 halftime score.
Concordia kept the deficit to single digits throughout the second half. After coming within five points on four occasions, Vallier converted a layup to make it a one-possession game at 40-37 with 8:30 left.
Madi Hess then brought the Choctaw lead down to two by making one of two free throws after stealing the ball on the other end. Traci Rogers, however, finished a layup in transition on the other end to keep the hosts ahead at 42-38.
But Concordia kept fighting back and was able to tie the game at 42-all courtesy of a
Katherine Frost layup on a play that began with a steal by
Madison Kramr with just over five to play. Stewart, however, made a free throw on the other end to give the hosts a one-point edge and spark a 9-3 run to close out the game.
Liddell recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Tornados. She also blocked one shot. Frost and
Paige Parrish finished with seven and six points, respectively.
Stewart paced Mississippi College (5-2, ASC 2-1) with 14 points and seven steals. Jasmine James and Jamie Lack recorded eight points and seven boards apiece.
Concordia will visit Louisiana College on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. in what will be a rematch of last year's ASC championship game that the Tornados won by a 73-64 score.
