CONFERENCE RELEASE
RICHARDSON, Texas -- Five Concordia University Texas men's soccer players garnered all-conference honors in a statement released by the American Southwest Conference Tuesday morning. Senior forward #Armando Dimeo# headlined the Tornados' selections after being named Third Team All-ASC West Division.
"I am really proud of all of the guys on the team," said Concordia head men's soccer coach Dan Darden. "It's nice that the other coaches around the league recognized how talented our players are as well."
Dimeo, who finished his career as the second most prolific scorer in CTX history, scored five goals and added two assists to lead the Tornados with 12 total points in 2009. Dimeo netted the game-winning goal versus Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sept. 6.
"Armando had his best season in what was a good four-year career at CTX," said Darden. "He deserves to be recognized as a top player in this conference and was glad to see the other coaches thought so as well."
Senior midfielder #Brian Friend# earned the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Friend had previously been spotlighted in the conference's all-access show for his academic prowess and community involvement. He was also named to the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team last week.
Junior midfielder #Mathew Waltz#, junior goalkeeper #Eric Davis# and freshman midfielder #Sebastian Parra# were all named All-ASC honorable mention after their 2009 campaigns.
Waltz led the Tornados with six assists in his first season at Concordia.
"Mat was a great addition to our team," Darden said. "He did exactly what a center midfielder should do and found a way to distribute the ball all season to put others in position to score."
Davis was the starting goalkeeper for the Tornados for most of the season, stopping 59 shots. Parra started 16 games for the Tornados in the midfield. He was one of only seven freshman around the conference to receive a postseason honor.
