GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Tommy Boggs era at Concordia University Texas started on the right foot as the Tornados (2-0) baseball team swept a doubleheader against Southwestern University at Rockwell Field on Saturday afternoon. CTX won both games in extra innings, winning game one 9-5 and game two 7-3.
Juniors
Justin Beasley,
Robert Brown, and
Kris Pearce all tallied four hits in the doubleheader to pace Concordia at the plate. Beasley recorded eight runs batted in and one home run on the day.
Game one of the doubleheader needed extra innings after CTX plated five runs in the top of the seventh only to have Southwestern (1-3) score two to tie the contest. In the top of the eighth inning, the Tornados busted out for four more runs. Freshman right-hander
Colin Butschek held the Pirates scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to pick up his first collegiate victory.
Junior left-hander
Scott Hays started the opener for Concordia, striking out five, allowing four hits and three runs over four and two-thirds innings. Butschek picked up the win after pitching two innings, striking out three and allowing two runs.
Beasley, who is currently on a nine-game hitting streak dating back to last season, was 3-for-5 at the plate with six RBI, two runs scored and a home run in the opener.
Overall, the Tornados pounded out 10 hits in the opener and scored all nine runs in the final two innings.
In the nightcap, senior right-hander
Ben Whiteley shut down Southwestern for most of the contest, allowing one unearned run in six innings of work. Whiteley gave way to junior right-hander
Russell Johns after striking out six and allowing just two hits. Johns allowed two eighth-inning runs to the Pirates, which forced the game to a ninth inning.
Concordia scored the go-ahead run as
Micah Runnels was driven in by a single off the bat of
Nick Kozole. Runnels reached on an error, which allowed him to make it to second base. Pearce followed with a single sending Runnels to third. Kozole stepped up and singled to score Runnels. The Tornados weren't finished as Beasley struck again, this time with a two-RBI double, plating Pearce and Kozole. After a Pirate pitching change, senior
Justin Yeager flied out to right field, which moved Beasley over to third. Junior
Bucky Bryant then plated Beasley with a single to right field, capping off the Tornados runs.
Junior right-hander
Pedro Maldonado came on in the bottom of the ninth for Concordia. After walking the first batter, Maldonado got the Pirates to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Maldonado walked the next batter but he finished off the game by forcing the following batter to fly out to left.
The Tornados will wrap up their opening series at Southwestern with a single nine-inning game at Rockwell Field on Sunday at noon.
