BOX SCORE
GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Junior infielder
Justin Beasley came through again for the Concordia University Texas baseball team after hitting a bases-clearing single, which helped the Tornados (3-0) to a 9-6 win over Southwestern University at Rockwell Field on Sunday afternoon.
Concordia led 5-4 in the eighth inning before busting out for four runs. Freshman
Michael Bogard singled to center field to lead off the inning. Junior
Pedro Maldonado advanced Bogard 90 feet after laying down a sacrifice bunt. Junior catcher
Russell Johns grounded out to the second baseman, moving Bogard to third. Junior infielder
C.J. Riojas battled and singled through the right side, plating Bogard and extending CTX's lead to 6-4. After back-to-back singles by senior
Micah Runnels and junior
Kris Pearce, Beasley came to the plate with the bases loaded. After working the count full, Beasley connected on a pitch which was lined into center field. With the runners moving from the 3-2 count, Beasley plated all three, including Pearce who scored all the way from first base.
In the home half of the ninth inning, Southwestern (1-4) tried its best to pull off a come-from-behind win. The Tornados allowed two runs, but left the bases loaded as freshman right-hander
Austin Rupert came on to record his first collegiate save.
Beasley finished the contest by going 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI to lead Concordia. Bogard was 3-for-3 on the day with four runs scored. Runnels also recorded two hits for the Tornados.
Sophomore left-hander
Steven Peterson was awarded the win in relief. Peterson worked two and one-thirds innings, allowing one run and no hits.
Concordia will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 at the University of Texas-Dallas in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Richardson.
