Baseball Takes Series After Split

BROWNWOOD, Texas --
Two sixth-inning runs by Howard Payne University prevented a series sweep for the Concordia University Texas baseball team on Saturday at Don Shepard Park.  HPU (9-8, 1-2 ASC) won game one 5-4 and CTX (8-10, 2-1 ASC) picked up the nightcap win 14-8.  #Robert Brown# led the Tornados at the plate during the doubleheader, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three doubles.

In the nightcap, Concordia took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.  However, the Yellow Jackets plated six runs to claim a one-run lead.  The Tornados answered with four runs in the top of the sixth, taking a 9-6 lead.  After Howard Payne scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one, Concordia busted out for five more runs during the seventh and eighth innings to claim the 14-8 victory.

#Jason Rangel# (2-2) came on in relief to earn the win on the mound.  #Pedro Maldonado# went three-for-four at the plate with three RBI.  #Justin Yeager# and #Alec Carter# each posted two hits and two RBI in the win.

Howard Payne claimed the opening game after plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Rangel, who was saddled with the loss. 

The Tornados recorded the conference series opening win at Howard Payne after taking two of the three games over the weekend.  Concordia will host Nebraska Wesleyan at Dell Diamond on Monday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m.
