Austin, Texas – Nearly 50 Concordia University Texas student-athletes played an active role as key volunteers at Special Olympics Texas' Area 13 bowling competition on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Showplace Lanes. The group represented players from the institution's baseball, softball, volleyball and women's basketball teams.
Approximately 25 Concordia volunteers worked an early shift that went from 8-11:30 a.m. before another group of the same size came for the second shift that started at 10:45 a.m. and went past 4 p.m. The CTX student-athletes mainly acted as lane monitors while assisting all of the SOTX athletes as needed and cheering them on throughout the day. Several other Tornado student-athletes plan to attend and help out at the event which will continue at Showplace Lanes over the next three days.
Headed by junior women's soccer defender Dalaine Whitlock and overseen by head women's soccer coach Corey Holton and head softball coach Denise Lira Concordia's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) started an Athletes for Athletes program that has been recognized by SOTX Public Relations after officially announcing a partnership with the non-profit organization at its annual athletic awards banquet on Apr. 19, 2011. The program involves Concordia student-athletes going to support and volunteer at SOTX events in Austin and SOTX athletes coming to Concordia home events to support the Tornados in which all the game activities would be centered around them.
The partnership kicked off when Concordia student-athletes and staff volunteered and supported SOTX athletes at the organization's inaugural flag football event on Oct. 1 before the SOTX athletes came to support the CTX volleyball team against Schreiner on Oct. 18, which included participating in a serve out contest between sets two and three.
Following this week's bowling competition, the next event for the Athletes for Athletes program is slated to be a home basketball doubleheader versus Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, Dec. 10 that begins with the women's game at 1 p.m.
