Alex O'Neal registered three season highs, including 12 points, and
Christen McLee fell just shy of her first career double-double to lead the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a 64-59 victory over Texas Lutheran on Thursday, Jan. 12 at the CTX Field House.
The first half was competitive, featuring four ties and eight lead changes. Texas Lutheran started to break away when Jenna Silva sank a 3-point field goal to make it 14-8. Concordia, however, responded with seven unanswered and went ahead 15-14 on a
Shamika Singleton jumper.
The lead changed five more times in the final five minutes of the half. After O'Neal canned one of her two 3-point field goals to put Concordia ahead by a 21-20 score, Texas Lutheran ended the half on a 5-2 run to take a 25-23 lead at the break. Chelsey Stolle converted a layup with 32 seconds left to give the Bulldogs the two-point edge at the half.
A 3-pointer by Ashley Robinson started the scoring in the second half to put the visitors ahead by five, but a trifecta by
Madi Hess would give the Tornados a 36-34 advantage and the lead for good with 14:12 remaining. The Concordia lead grew to eight on a Singleton jumper, and
Katherine Frost made a trey from the left arc that made it 61-54 and proved to be the dagger with 55 seconds left. O'Neal and
Jessie Pittman combined for three free throws to give the Tornados all the offense they needed until time expired.
In addition to scoring 12 points, O'Neal also added five assists and four steals to lead the way for Concordia.
Lashanda Luckey added 11 points, while McLee fell just shy of her first career double-double with nine points and nine boards to go along with six steals. Singleton posted eight points as well as six picks.
Texas Lutheran (3-11, ASC 2-8) was paced by Kimberly Hagan's double-double of 16 points and 11 boards off the bench. Rebecca Valdez contributed eight points and 10 rebounds, while Robinson added 11 assists and three steals.
Concordia (11-2, ASC 9-1), which stayed in first place with the victory, hosts Schreiner on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m.
