Austin, Texas – The Concordia University Texas volleyball team volunteered at a volleyball clinic with Special Olympics Texas Athletes on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The clinic was held at the Dittmar Recreation Center.
The evening started with each Tornado being paired up with a Special Olympics athlete and working with them on individual skills such as setting, hitting and serving. Afterwards, both groups played unified games with Concordia athletes and Special Olympics athletes competing together on the same teams.
CTX Athletics established what has blossomed into a very successful partnership with Special Olympics Texas as well as an Athletes for Athletes program which has been recognized by SOTX Public Relations. The program involves Concordia student-athletes going to support and volunteer at SOTX events in Austin and SOTX athletes coming to Concordia home events to support the Tornados in which all the game activities would be centered around them. Last night's event occurred shortly after Special Olympics athletes came to a home volleyball match against Hardin-Simmons last month.
Concordia student-athletes and staff will attend the SOTX Area 13 bowling competition on Sunday, Nov. 11 at Showplace Lanes before volunteering and administrating the region's second annual flag football event on Sunday, Dec. 2 at Garrison Park.
