Shamika Singleton scored a game-high 23 points off the bench in leading the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team to a 60-48 road victory over Schreiner on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Edington Gymnasium. The Tornados clinched the program's first outright American Southwest Conference West Division crown and will be a top seed for next week's league tournament, which will be the school's first postseason appearance in seven years.
Schreiner took control of the game in the opening minutes by scoring the first four points and seven of the first nine, as Lindsey Peterson and Karisa Cantu each nailed jumpers before Olivia Swarner followed with a conventional 3-point play. Concordia came back and took its first lead at 10-9 with 13:48 to play on a good jump shot by
Brianna Smith and would lead by six thanks to a 3-pointer by
Paige Parrish at the 12-minute mark. After two more ties, the Tornados would take the lead for good when Singleton broke a 27-all deadlock at the 3:20 mark. A Peterson bucket made it 31-29 at the half.
Concordia started the second frame hot and on a 13-2 run to pull away. Smith finished a pass from
Termeka Canada to give the Tornados a 44-31 lead at the 15:29 mark. The Mountaineers came within seven twice on a 3-pointer by Melanie Cavazos and a jumper by Swarner, but the Tornados shook off the attempted comeback and went by as many as 16 before it was all over. A basket by Jessica Galindo in the waning seconds produced the final outcome.
Singleton scored her 23 points on 10-for-12 shooting for Concordia. She also had three rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.
Jessie Pittman added 12 points off the bench, while
Margaret Milling finished with a game-high five steals.
Schreiner (7-18, ASC 5-16) was paced by Swarner, who contributed 13 points, eight boards and two assists. Peterson and Lia Phillips recorded eight and six points, respectively.
Concordia (20-4, ASC 18-3) will play the East Division's fourth seed in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 American Southwest Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by Louisiana College from Feb. 24-26. The Tornados will be making their second appearance overall and first since 2005 at the league's postseason event.
