Richardson, Texas – Concordia University Texas'
Matt McManemin and
Jacob Spelbring earned American Southwest Conference West Division Baseball weekly honors, as announced by the league office on Monday, Feb. 6. McManemin was named the hitter of the week, while Spelbring earned pitcher of the week accolades after leading the Tornados to a three-game sweep of Southwestern.
McManemin, who was named to the All-ASC West Division First Team as a second baseman most notably for his defense, had the best week of his career offensively to open up the 2012 campaign. He batted in the ninth spot of the order in all three games against the Pirates, starting two, and reached base every time he came up to post a 1.000 batting average, 1.000 on-base percentage and 1.500 slugging percentage in the series. McManemin first went 1-for-1 and was hit by a pitch four times in the 10-9 win over Southwestern. He drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth in walkoff fashion when he was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded.
After going 1-for-1 with a double in the 8-4 7-inning win over the Pirates, the Carrollton native came in as a reserve and went 2-for-2 with a double, a career-best four RBI and a walk to fuel the team's convincing 15-3 win to end the series. Defensively, McManemin did not commit an error at second base while recording two putouts and five assists.
Spelbring, a senior from Round Rock and graduate of nearby Stony Point, was the winning pitcher in Concordia's 10-9 walk-off victory over Southwestern by giving the Tornados two key scoreless innings of relief. With the game tied up at 9-9, Spelbring struck out the side in the eighth before keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard in the ninth to set up win and establish the tone in Concordia's three-game series sweep.
Concordia (3-0) continues its seven-game homestand when it hosts the Rudy's BBQ Tornado Classic on Feb. 10-11. The Tornados open up against Howard Payne at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10 and will also play games against Louisiana College, LeTourneau and nationally-ranked Trinity.
