Newberg, Oregon – The Concordia University Texas women's basketball team is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history in Oregon this weekend. One of the student-athletes will reflect on her personal experiences as well as the team's each day.
Termeka Canada, who flew on a plane for the first time in her life, talked about the first day of the trip.
TERMEKA CANADA'S THOUGHTS ON DAY ONE OF NCAA TOURNAMENT TRIP TO OREGON:
The sendoff to start the trip on our campus was just amazing. Just knowing that most of the students were there to support us and eat free food was great. Having all the support and love is the best feeling. It helps us realize that we are not only doing this for us, but for all of our fans, family and friends back home. The sendoff was an amazing experience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. The hardest part of the sendoff was seeing that Coach Rainbolt was not feeling well. But it makes me want to win even more.
The bus ride to the Austin airport was very exciting. Having our personal driver, James, to transport us to the airport was very important! He always has us pumped and ready with his music and words.
The scariest thing I have done in my life is get on a plane. I have never flown before, so this experience was definitely one to remember. I was so nervous and scared it was ridiculous! Once we got on the plane, I was the first person to jump by a window. In my mind, I thought that if I am going to do this that I better see the beautiful scenery.
Waiting for the plane to take off with the team was comforting for Shamika and I. She hates to fly, and it's made us better friends. Taking off was the best feeling ever, but landing was awful because my ears would never pop until 30 minutes later.
When we finally reached our destination, it was 2 a.m. here and 4 a.m. back in Texas. Everyone was extremely tired and hungry. It took us an hour to find a place to eat, but when we did the food we had was delicious. We finally got to lay our heads down around 3:30 – 4 a.m. here.
Being in this town just makes me excited and ready to do it big for not just my family, friends and fans, but for Coach Rainbolt as well. Making him proud is the best feeling ever.
