POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER RYAN ULLMANN
Austin, Texas –
Chance Leissner blasted a two-run homer and Most Outstanding Player
Ryan Ullmann hurled a six-hit shutout in leading the Concordia University Texas baseball team to a 5-0 win against Texas-Dallas on Saturday, Apr. 27 at Tornado Field. With the victory, the Tornados advanced to the double-elimination championship round of the ASC Tournament which will be hosted by Texas-Tyler.
Texas-Dallas' Calvin Campbell and Ullmann found themselves locked in a classic pitcher's duel through five innings, but the Tornados finally broke through with the game's first run in the top of the sixth. Batting with the bases loaded and two outs,
Jon McManemin hit a hard ball on the ground that was knocked down by Comet second baseman Jacob Price.
Matt Smith was able to score on the play before Campbell induced a flyout to get out of the inning.
With Ullmann still in complete control, Concordia (22-20) used that momentum to add two more runs in the seventh and eighth frames to pull away. Leissner broke the game open by blasting a two-run homer over the fence in left on a full count to make it 3-0.
Quinn Guest then singled to put another pair of insurance runs on the board, giving Ullmann more than enough of a cushion to work with the rest of the way.
Ullmann, who has hurled 20 consecutive shutout innings over his last four appearances, earned the victory for Concordia and improved to 6-3 overall. He recorded five strikeouts and issued only one walk. Campbell, who entered the game with an 0.93 earned run average, suffered the loss for Texas-Dallas (21-21) and fell to 4-2 after giving up three hits and two runs that were earned over 6.1 innings. He struck out four and walked five.
Concordia will travel to Texas-Tyler for next weekend's double-elimination championship event. The Patriots earned the right to host next weekend's event by sweeping their best-of-three series against Hardin-Simmons.
