CTX tops ETBU, falls to UT Dallas in day one of ASC Tournament

RICHARDSON, Texas – The Concordia Texas volleyball team opened the American Southwest Conference Tournament with a straight sets win over East Texas Baptist before falling 3-0 to UT Dallas in the winners bracket game.

In the win over ETBU, CTX set a record for the second most wins in school history with 17, trailing only the 23 wins in the 1999 season.

The Tornados are now 17-13 on the year and will look to keep their season alive Friday against UT Tyler.

Marissa Stinson led the way for CTX in game one, racking up 13 kills and a .476 hitting percentage in the match.

In the first set, the Tornados used a 4-0 lead to close out the set and win 25-20.

CTX grabbed set two by the same 25-20 score thanks in large part to three service aces from Kelly Farina to pull ahead in the middle of the set.

After falling behind 9-5 early in set three, the Tornados rallied from behind to take the third set 25-23 and grab their 11th sweep of the season.

In the nightcap, CTX took on the number one seed from the East Division UT Dallas.

The Tornados held an early 11-9 lead in the first set, but the Comets used a 5-0 run to pull ahead and won the set 25-15.

UT Dallas jumped ahead 10-1 in set two and was able to keep CTX at arms length the rest of the match and win 25-11.

The Comets went on to win the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Next up for the Tornados will be a matchup with the number two seed from the East Division UT Tyler at 2:30 p.m.
