Junior Megan Wagenaar of the women’s cross country team is the fourth Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. She is earning the award for the seventh time of her career and second time this fall.
Wagenaar ran the fastest 5,000-meter time in school history by 17 seconds in a dual meet against Southwestern. She won the individual title in 19:13.72, which bettered Maegan Leider's previous record of 19:30.9 established at the UTSA Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas/HEB Classic on Sept. 14, 2012. Wagenaar's winning performance helped Concordia finish 11 points ahead of Southwestern at the dual meet.
“Megan (Wagenaar) is doing all the right things in order to be successful,” said reigning American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year Alex Aldaco. “She is a great example for her teammates.”
The women’s cross country team, which has been regionally ranked, has taken three of the four Taco Bell Athlete of the Week honors this fall after seeing two athletes combine to break the 5,000-meter course record three times. Wagenaar initially held the mark of 19:32 before it was broken by Leider at the UTSA meet and surpassed again by Wagenaar and Leider at Brushy Creek this past Saturday. Leider’s time at Brushy Creek was a personal-best 19:24.03.
Wagenaar, a business major from Missouri City, Texas, is the daughter of Jane and Lucas Wagenaar. She has one sister, Ashley.
