Sophomore Madi Hess of the women’s basketball team is the 12th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. She is earning the award for the first time of her career after leading the Tornados to a 2-0 start as well as the team title at the CTX Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend.
Hess, who made the American Southwest Conference All-Freshman Team last season, averaged 12.0 points, 4.0 steals and 3.0 assists per game in the victories over Whittier and LeTourneau. She also shot 60 percent from the field and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Her scoring and steals marks were also team highs.
Hess netted a career-high 14 points, which included shooting 5-for-7 from the field, and added five steals and four assists in the team’s 83-79 win over Whittier. She followed that performance up by contributing 10 points, three steals and two assists in an 84-72 victory against LeTourneau.
“Madi had a great weekend,” said reigning American Southwest Conference West Division Coach of the Year Rusty Rainbolt. “Her leadership and poise were excellent, and she made some big plays at the end of both games.”
A communication major from Cedar Park, Texas, Hess is the daughter of Diane and Jim Hess. She has one brother, Tanner.
