Senior Nick Haynes of the men’s basketball team is the 17th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. He is earning the award for the third time this season and fifth time of his career after helping the Tornados win both of their home games this past week against Northwood and Texas-Dallas.
Haynes averaged 24.5 points over the two victories and most notably hit the game-winning shot from downtown that barely beat the buzzer in a key 90-87 ASC win over Texas-Dallas. He began the week by netting 28 points in just 16 minutes of action in a 108-81 win over Northwood before adding 21 points, which included coming through in a clutch situation, against the Comets. Haynes also shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe as well as 53.8 percent from the field and 55 percent (11-for-20) from long range in the Tornado victories.
A marketing major from Irving, Texas, Haynes is the son of Keith and Angela Haynes. He has one sister, Erica, and one brother, Marquez.
