Senior Brianna Smith of the women’s basketball team is the 22nd Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. She is earning the award for the first time this season and second time of her career.
Despite logging in just 15 minutes of playing time, Smith most notably netted a career-high 36 points to help the Tornados earn an 82-61 win over Sul Ross State. She set a Division III program record and matched an American Southwest Conference single-game record by canning 10 3-point field goals in the game. Texas-Dallas’ Lyndsey Smith also drained 10 shots from downtown against Trinity in November 2010.
Smith averaged 24 points and six rebounds in road games against Howard Payne and Sul Ross State. She also shot 47.1 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from long range, and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
A native of Carrollton Texas, Smith is an education major and the daughter of Nancy and Doug Smith. She has two brothers, Zack and Josh, and one sister, Sarah.
