Senior Nick Haynes of the men’s basketball team is the 27th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. He is earning the award for the fourth time this season and sixth time of his career.
Haynes scored a team-leading 15 points, which included hitting four shots from downtown, in Concordia’s 87-83 NCAA Tournament victory on the road against Trinity on Saturday evening. He also dished out two assists, grabbed one rebound and did not commit a turnover. Haynes also came through with several clutch baskets to help give the Tornados enough of a cushion to eventually hang on for the win.
With Concordia leading 75-70 with under five minutes remaining, Haynes converted a rare four-point play by sinking a 3-pointer from the right arc as well as the ensuing free throw to give CTX a 79-70 advantage at the 4:23 mark. He then canned another 3-pointer with just under four minutes left to put the Tornados ahead by double figures before the team eventually held off a late run by the Tigers to win by four.
A marketing major from Irving, Texas, Haynes is the son of Keith and Angela Haynes. He has one sister, Erica, and one brother, Marquez.
