Senior Christina Smith of the softball team is the 29th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. She is earning the award for the first time of her career.
Smith helped Concordia win all four of its games in Arizona this past week, which including run ruling two opponents and earning a 2-1 eight-inning victory against one of the nation’s top teams in Central College. The senior batted .429 with six hits and seven runs scored from the leadoff spot. She also stole two bases, drove in two runs and had a .714 slugging percentage. Defensively, the senior did not commit an error in center field. Smith’s best performance came in a 9-1 five-inning win over Edgewood, as she went 3-for-3 with two triples, two stolen bases and two runs batted in. She also scored three times.
The Concordia softball team is 12-6 overall and has matched its best start in school history through 18 games. The Tornados have also won five games in a row, which includes posting two victories in extra innings.
Smith, a biology major from Mesa, Ariz., is the daughter of Irene and Gary Smith. She has two brothers, Gary and Tommy, and one sister, Jessica.
