Freshman Andrea Mitchell of the women’s track & field team is the 31st Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. She is earning the award for the first time of her career.
Mitchell factored into two of the nation’s fastest times in sprinting events while competing at two different meets – Texas Relays and Trinity Tiger Relays – on the same day. She first ran the 12th-fastest time in the country in the 100-meter dash by clocking in a time of 12.49 seconds at the Texas Relays. It was also the best mark in school history in the event that was not aided by the wind and put her in a position to become one of the first athletes in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships through the end of the weekend. Later in the day, Mitchell anchored the 4x100-meter relay team that placed fourth by navigating the track in 49.69 seconds at the Trinity Tiger Relays. The squad’s mark ranked 30th nationally.
Mitchell, a behavioral sciences major from Cypress, Texas, is the daughter of Crystal Jackson. She has one brother, Michael Parker, and three sisters, Nicole Tate, Jewel Mitchell and Treasie Mitchell.
