Freshman Justin Gonzalez of the men's track & field team is the 35th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year. He is earning the award for the first time of his career.

Gonzalez helped the men's track & field team post its highest finish and point total in program history at the American Southwest Conference Championships over the weekend by scoring in all three jumping events. He was named the ASC Outstanding Freshman Co-Athlete of the Year as well as all-conference after winning the triple jump, placing second in the high jump and finishing third in the long jump. Gonzalez's winning leap of 45-feet, 3.50-inches in the triple jump was also a school record.

A biology major from Pharr, Texas, Gonzalez is the son of Marina Elizondo and Joel Gonzalez. He has one sister, Jenna.
