Teylor Schiefelbein is the Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the first time after leading the softball program to a doubleheader sweep of Trinity on Sunday, Feb. 13 in San Antonio. The Tornados won the opener by a 9-1 score in a game that was called after six innings due to the eight-run rule before rallying from behind to register a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. Schiefelbein, who was making her collegiate debut, went batted .429 and went 3-for-7 in the games while also driving in two runs with her bat. She also won her first career start in the circle by registering a perfect 0.00 earned run average.
In the opener, Schiefelbein started at second base and registered her first career hit in the top of the second by blasting a single to center that drove in two runs and broke the game open. The freshman then earned her first career start in the circle of the nightcap and held her opponents to a .143 batting average. Schiefelbein yielded four hits and three runs, which were all unearned, while also fanning four hitters and issuing only two walks. In addition, the three hitters in the heart of the batting order went a combined 0-for-8. Schiefelbein, who was a two-time all-state selection on the scholastic level, helped herself out offensively by going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Schiefelbein is a communications major and the daughter of Danene and Craig Schiefelbein. She has one sister, Nicole.
