Brent Schaekel is being honored as the Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the second time this spring after earning a place on the NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team. The sophomore helped Concordia, the American Southwest Conference champions, finish 2-2 at the regional with victories over nationally-ranked programs.
Schaekel ended the regional with a .444 batting average to go along with six runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases. He finished tied for first in runs scored as well as tied for second in total hits (8) and thefts among all players in the six-team field. A sophomore center fielder from Tomball, Texas, Schaekel recorded multiple hits in three of the four games. He most notably notched two hits and stole a pair of bases in a 5-2 win over Linfield and also went 3-for-6 with four runs scored against Redlands, helping the Tornados upset a nationally-ranked opponent in each game.
Schaekel, a business major, is the son of Joan and Bert Schaekel. He has two brothers, Kevin and John, and one sister, Deanna.
