Sophomore Megan Wagenaar of the women’s cross country team is the fourth Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year after leading the squad to a runner-up finish, which is also a program best, at the Texas Division III Championships. She is earning the honor for the second time in her career.
Wagenaar broke her own school record on a 6,000-meter circuit by over at minute at Saturday’s meet at Grover Nelson Park in Abilene. She navigated the course in 23:37.76, which shattered her old program standard of 24:38 that she recorded at the 2010 American Southwest Conference Championships.
“Megan is still new to the sport,” head cross country coach Alex Aldaco stated. “She is only beginning to see what she can accomplish moving forward.”
Wagenaar, a business major from Missouri City, Texas, is the daughter of Jane and Lucas Wagenaar. She has one sister, Ashley.
