Freshman defender Elizabeth Evangelista of the women’s soccer team is the fifth Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year after leading the squad to an undefeated record with shutout victories on the road over Texas Lutheran and Schreiner. She is earning the honor for the first time in her career.
Evangelista anchored a back line which set a set record for ending the weekend with a shutout streak that is currently at a school-record 340:40. The mark beat out the previous program standard of 326:26 that was established between Sept. 6-19, 2009. Concordia (6-4, ASC 4-2) yielded only two shots, including one on net, in a 2-0 win over Texas Lutheran before surrendering three in a 3-0 victory against Schreiner. The team has not yielded a goal since a Howard Payne player found the back of the net before the midway point of the first half on Sept. 22.
“Elizabeth has been our most consistent force on our back line in every match this season,” head coach Corey Holton stated.
Evangelista, a kinesiology major from Mansfield, Texas, is the daughter of Brenda and Tony Evangelista. She has one sister, Allison.
