Sophomore Megan Wagenaar of the women's cross country team is the ninth Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year after leading the squad to its first American Southwest Conference championship at Texas Lutheran. She is earning the honor for the third time in her career and the second time this season.
Wagenaar placed third overall, the highest finish ever by a Tornado harrier at the event, and first on the team by navigating the 6,000-meter circuit in 24:05.93. The sophomore, who ran the fastest 5,000- and 6,000-meter times in school history this season, also headlined a program-record four CTX athletes who were named all-conference and made the All-ASC First Team. She is also among three Tornados in the program annals to garner All-ASC honors twice in her career after making the all-conference second team as a freshman in 2010.
“Megan really ran a gutsy race to lead us to our first conference title,” stated head cross country coach Alex Aldaco, who was named the ASC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Wagenaar, a business major from Missouri City, Texas, is the daughter of Jane and Lucas Wagenaar. She has one sister, Ashley.
