Sophomore Megan Wagenaar of the women’s cross country team is the 11th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year after leading the squad to its best-ever finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional at Texas Lutheran. She is earning the honor for the fourth time in her career and the third time this fall.
Wagenaar placed 39th overall among 197 competitors by navigating the 6,000-meter circuit in 24:41.5 to lead Concordia to a ninth-place finish, which was also the best placing by any American Southwest Conference school on record. The Tornados had never been higher than 23rd in the standings as a team prior to this past weekend’s performance.
“I am very proud of the way Megan finished her season while leading us to our highest finish ever at the NCAA Regional,” stated Alex Aldaco, who was named the ASC Coach of the Year.
Wagenaar, a business major from Missouri City, Texas, is the daughter of Jane and Lucas Wagenaar. She has one sister, Ashley.
