Junior Travis Flye of the men's basketball team is the 12th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year for his performance in the squad's season opener against Trinity. He is earning the honor for the first time in his career.
Flye made the most of his limited playing time by accumulating 12 points, which included shooting 5-for-10 from the field and 2-for-2 from the stripe, as well as seven rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot in just 12 minutes of action. One of his field goals was a buzzer-beating jumper that gave the Tornados a 36-35 halftime lead over the Tigers.
"Travis was a dominant presence, both offensively and defensively, in his Tornado debut," said eighth-year head coach Stan Bonewitz, who is also serving as Interim Director of Athletics.
Flye, a computer science major from Pasadena, Calif., is the son of Yvette and Phillip Flye. He has one sister, Andi.
