Senior Shamika Singleton of the women’s basketball team is the 14th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year for her performance in the team’s two road wins against Texas-Tyler and LeTourneau. She is earning the honor for the seventh time in her career.
Singleton was a major reason why Concordia started the season 4-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign while ending the weekend as the only unbeaten team in the American Southwest Conference. She averaged 21 points and six rebounds per game, which were both team highs, while shooting 52.6 percent from the field, 66.7 percent from long range and 83.3 percent from the line.
Singleton first helped the Tornados rally from 15 points down to defeat Texas-Tyler on the road, 76-65, by scoring 20 of her 26 points in the second half. She ended up shooting 52.6 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the line while also draining a clutch 3-point field goal that made it 75-65 with 1:11 left to play that iced the win for the Tornados. Despite logging in just 16 minutes of playing time in a 29-point win over LeTourneau, Singleton still managed to put up a team-leading 16 points on 58.3 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
“Shamika has really stepped up as a leader and has elevated her game as well,” said head coach Rusty Rainbolt, whose squad has won all four of its games by an average margin of 20 points.
Singleton, a physical therapy major, is the daughter of Tommy Singleton and Cotina Jones. She has one brother, Tommy (19) and two younger sisters, De'Angela and Tiera.
