Senior Josh Johnson of the men’s basketball team had the best week and best game of his career and is the 22nd Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year for his performances in key road wins against Sul Ross State and Howard Payne. He also helped the Tornados end the weekend on a five-game winning streak, which is a season best.

After recording 10 points and five rebounds in the a 94-86 overtime win over the Lobos, Johnson set career highs for points (28) and rebounds (14) and matched a career best for blocked shots(5) while shooting 58.8 percent from the field and 80 percent from the stripe in the team's 96-92 win over Howard Payne. He averaged 19.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game while shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the stripe.

“Over the last month, Josh has continued to work harder in practice and in games,” said head coach Stan Bonewitz, whose squad is now alone in third place in a crowded American Southwest Conference West Division. “As a result, both he and the team have played better.”

Johnson, a native of Houston, is the son of Cynthia and Donald Johnson. He has two brothers, Devin and Chris.
