Concordia Texas Athletics

Senior Shamika Singleton of the women's basketball team is the 24th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year for her performance in double-digit road wins over Texas Lutheran and Schreiner. She is earning the honor for the ninth time in her career.

Singleton helped Concordia post a 2-0 ledger and lock up its first-ever ASC West Division crown after the program had never finished higher than fourth in the standings. She led the team in scoring (18.5 ppg) and blocked shots (1.0 pg) while ranking tied for second in rebounding (3.5 pg) and steals (1.5) in victories. Singleton also shot 56.7 percent from the field.

The senior forward started the week by posting 14 points, four rebounds, one steal and one block in a 76-61 win over Texas Lutheran, which gave the Tornados sole possession of first place. She had eight of her 14 points and all four of her boards in the second half. Singleton capped the weekend by scoring a game-high 23 points off the bench, which included shooting 10-for-12 from the field, while recording three rebounds, two steals and one block in the 60-48 victory over Schreiner. She was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in the second half.

The women’s basketball team will compete at the ASC Tournament for the first time since 2005 has set all-time program records for overall wins (20) and ASC wins (18), beating previous marks of 16 and 15, respectively.

Singleton, a physical therapy major, is the daughter of Tommy Singleton and Cotina Jones. She has one brother, Tommy, and two younger sisters, De'Angela and Tiera.
