Senior Shamika Singleton of the women's basketball team is the 25th Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year after being named the American Southwest Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player over the weekend. She is earning the honor for the 10th time in her career.
Singleton helped Concordia capture its first ASC Tournament title by winning three games in as many days by an average margin of 14.3 points, which included a 73-64 win over 22nd-ranked Louisiana College to put an end to the Wildcats’ 40-game home court winning streak. She averaged 11.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.3 assists per game. Singleton’s best performance came in the championship, as she recorded 13 points, a career-best 17 rebounds and two blocked shots against the Wildcats. Concordia will compete in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history next weekend.
Singleton, a physical therapy major, is the daughter of Tommy Singleton and Cotina Jones. She has one brother, Tommy, and two younger sisters, De'Angela and Tiera.
