Junior Melissa Cantu of the softball team is the 31st Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year. She is receiving the award for the first time of her career.
Cantu had a breakthrough weekend in leading Concordia to a four-game sweep of Sul Ross State. After being used in the flex spot for the opener, the junior went 5-for-9 with two triples, five RBI and four runs scored while slugging 1.000 over the final three games. Cantu recorded her first career hits by going 2-for-3 with three RBI in game two of the four-game set on Friday. One day later, she followed up that effort by going 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored in the opener before ending the series with a 2-for-3 performance with a triple, two RBI and one run scored. The junior is now batting .294 on the season.
Cantu, a native of Corpus Christi and a kinesiology major, is the daughter of Terry and Arturo Cantu. She has one sister, Nicole.
