Tornados defeat UTD, advance to second-straight ASC Tournament Championship match

DALLAS – For the second consecutive season, the Concordia Texas men's tennis team will play for a conference championship after defeating UT Dallas 5-2 in the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Tournament on Friday at the SMU Indoor Courts.

The Tornados, who reached the semis after sweeping East Texas Baptist 5-0 on Thursday, faced off against the ASC East one seed and reigning conference champions Comets, who defeated CTX in the 2019 title match.

The Tornados enacted their revenge though, defeating UTD 5-2.

Concordia Texas took an early 2-1 lead in the match after winning at lines two and three in doubles play.

Joshua Bode and Adrian Munguia took care of business at line two handily, overwhelming the Comets' Haydn Steffes and Jed De Luna 8-3. Meanwhile, at line three, Esteban Arredondo and Michael Davis held off Ritvik Ganesan and Nick Boquet for an 8-6 win.

In singles play, Munguia picked up another point for the Tornados, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at line three to make it 3-1.

The Comets earned a point at line two, but Evan Pena Jr. rolled past De Luna in straight sets at line six, pushing CTX's advantage to 4-1.

Joeri Bregman clinched the Tornados' second straight ASC Tournament championship match appearance with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at line four to secure the 5-2 team victory.

It is Concordia Texas' second appearance in the ASC Tournament title match in program history. They will go for their first-ever conference championship on Saturday, facing ASC West one seed Hardin-Simmons at 11 a.m. at the UTD Tennis Courts in Richardson, Texas.
