AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's tennis team 2022 season came to a close Saturday, falling 5-2 to Hardin-Simmons in a hard-fought American Southwest Conference Tournament championship match.
The Tornados, making their second straight ASC championship match appearance and defending their 2021 ASC titles, won one doubles match and battled throughout singles play, but ultimately fell after seven matches.
Joshua Bode and
Adrian Munguia picked up the doubles win, besting HSU's top two players 8-6 at line one.
At line two,
Esteban Arredondo and
Andres Padilla won four games but ultimately fell 8-4.
Joeri Bregman and
Evan Pena Jr. staged a comeback at line three, winning four straight games but coming up short 8-5.
In singles play, HSU took the first two wins at lines one and two.
At line one,
Joshua Bode battled to a 6-4 first set, but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-0.
Adrian Munguia won four games in the first set and two in the second, but he was unable to pick up the win as he fell 6-4, 6-2.
Next,
Andres Padilla earned a commanding straight-sets victory, winning line five 6-4, 6-1.
The final outcome was clinched at line five, where Arredondo went back-and-forth with HSU's number five but fell after splitting sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
When play was ended,
Jorge Garcia and Pena Jr. were both in split-set matches awaiting the decisive third set.
The Tornados season comes to a close with 14-4 record, including 5-0 in ASC play to earn the program's first West Division championship. Concordia Texas makes back-to-back ASC Championship appearances in what proved to be the two best seasons in program history.
Concordia Texas will bid farewell to its seniors Josh Bode,
Esteban Arredondo,
Jorge Garcia,
Jesse West, and
Nico De La Pena, and will return for the 2022-23 season with a mix of new and familiar faces but the same ultimate goal of another ASC Championship.
