Concordia University Texas Names Annika Canaba Head Volleyball Coach

Award-winning athlete and rising coach to guide Tornados forward

AUSTIN, Texas — Concordia University Texas has named Annika Canaba as its next head women's volleyball coach, Director of Athletics Matt Wallis announced today. Canaba, who has served as head coach at Sul Ross State University for the past two seasons, will begin her tenure on Jan. 5.  

Canaba arrives at Concordia Texas with a distinguished playing and academic record from her time as a two-sport athlete at Sul Ross State in the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference. She graduated as the program's all-time leader in kills with 1,315 and earned first-team All-ASC honors four times. Her accolades include ASC Woman of the Year (2021), ASC Volleyball Most Valuable Player (2021), ASC Volleyball Freshman of the Year (2018), ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2020–21 and 2021–22), ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor (2021), and AVCA Division III Region 10 Honorable Mention.

"Her proven leadership as a head coach, combined with her exceptional background as a Division III All-Conference performer and student-leader, makes her the perfect fit to elevate our program. Annika's passion for developing student-athletes aligns perfectly with our Christ-centered mission." 

 Canaba spent the past two seasons as head coach at Sul Ross State, guiding the program through its transition into the Lone Star Conference. 

"I'm honored to join Concordia Texas and build on the program's foundation," Canaba said. "My goal is to develop competitive student-athletes who excel academically, athletically and spiritually." 

Canaba will also oversee the launch of Concordia Texas' inaugural beach volleyball season.
