Former Texas Tech standout Stan Bonewitz enters his 23rd season as the head coach of the Concordia University Texas men's basketball program in 2026-27. He also serves as the department's associate director of athletics.
During his tenure at Concordia Texas, Bonewitz has established the Tornados as a consistent postseason contender while guiding the program through successful eras in both the American Southwest Conference (ASC) and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC).
Under Bonewitz, the Tornados have captured the program's first conference tournament championship, made multiple conference tournament championship game appearances and earned the program's first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance and postseason victory. He has also coached numerous all-conference, all-region and national award winners.
Bonewitz earned his 200th career victory on Jan. 25, 2018, with a 95-94 win over Sul Ross State.
2025-26
The 2025-26 season marked one of the most successful campaigns of Bonewitz's tenure as the Tornados posted a 23-5 overall record and 14-2 mark in SCAC play before advancing to the SCAC Tournament Championship game.
Concordia established itself as one of the nation's most explosive teams, ranking among the NCAA Division III leaders in scoring and forced turnovers. The Tornados defeated Austin College and LeTourneau in the SCAC Tournament to advance to the championship game.
Under Bonewitz's guidance, senior guard Joey Ramirez produced one of the most decorated individual seasons in program history. Ramirez became the first Tornado to earn SCAC Player of the Year honors and the program's first conference player of the year since Dwayne Patterson in 2013.
Ramirez was one of six Tornados to earn All-SCAC recognition and went on to receive D3hoops.com First Team All-Region 10 honors. He was also named an NABC Second Team All-American, becoming Concordia's first men's basketball All-American since K.B. DeBord in 2002. Ramirez was selected to participate in the NABC Division III All-Star Game and earned MVP honors in the contest.
2024-25
In 2024-25, Concordia began a new era as the university transitioned from the American Southwest Conference to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The Tornados finished 13-13 overall and 10-6 in SCAC play and qualified for the SCAC Tournament during their inaugural season in the league.
Four Tornados earned All-SCAC recognition. Joey Ramirez led the way with First Team All-SCAC honors after averaging 18.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Donovan Stafford was named to the Third Team, while Adolfo Martinez and Aaron San Miguel also received all-conference recognition.
2023-24
The 2023-24 season marked Concordia's final campaign as a member of the American Southwest Conference. The Tornados once again qualified for the ASC Tournament, continuing Bonewitz's long-standing success in reaching postseason play.
Donovan Stafford, DJ Pigford and Corey Thompson earned All-ASC honors. Stafford led the group with Second Team All-ASC recognition after averaging 21.5 points per game and scoring 560 points during the season.
Stafford also became a member of Concordia's 1,000-point club during the campaign.
2022-23
In 2022-23, the Tornados posted a 13-12 record and once again advanced to the ASC Tournament.
Freshman guard Jaylon Johnson emerged as one of the top young players in the region. Johnson averaged 19.6 points, 4.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game while starting 22 of 25 contests.
Johnson was named the ASC Freshman of the Year and earned D3hoops.com Region 10 Rookie of the Year honors.
2021-22
During the 2021-22 season, Bonewitz guided Concordia to another appearance in the ASC Tournament.
The Tornados secured their postseason berth following a convincing 96-62 victory over Belhaven in the regular-season finale. CTX went on to face Mary Hardin-Baylor in the ASC Tournament quarterfinals, falling 87-82 to conclude the season.
The campaign also included a strong start for the Tornados, highlighted by an overtime victory over LeTourneau and wins over Southwestern, Schreiner, Texas Lutheran, UT Dallas and Ozarks.
2020-21
The 2020-21 season saw a delayed start and shortened schedule due to COVID-19 precautions, but Bonewitz and his squad were able to prevail and make their ninth-straight ASC Tournament appearance.
The Tornados finished 5-6 overall and 4-6 in ASC play, winning their final two regular-season games down the stretch to secure a fourth-place finish in the ASC West Division and a conference tournament berth.
Five Tornados represented the program with All-ASC honors, including a first-team selection for Antoine Henderson.
2019-20
During the 2019-20 season, the Tornados featured a young roster with only three upperclassmen. After a 4-7 start to non-conference play, CTX closed out the calendar year with a dominating 88-69 victory over No. 23 Illinois Wesleyan.
The Tornados bounced back after dropping their first five conference games by putting together a six-game winning streak. CTX finished ASC play with a 7-9 record and qualified as the No. 2 seed out of the West Division for the ASC Tournament before falling to East Texas Baptist in the quarterfinals.
Philip Meikle, who became the 18th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau earlier in the season, was named to the ASC West First Team and ASC West All-Defensive Team.
Luis Gonzalez was named ASC West Co-Freshman of the Year and earned ASC West All-Freshman Team honors alongside teammate Trevon Hester. Ronnie Hamilton rounded out the award winners with ASC West Honorable Mention recognition.
2018-19
In 2018-19, CTX produced a strong second half of the season, going 10-6 in conference play and finishing the year 13-14 overall.
The Tornados secured the No. 2 seed in the ASC West and made their seventh consecutive ASC Tournament appearance, defeating Louisiana College in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals.
Joe Neal was named the ASC West Player of the Year after producing one of the best individual seasons in program history. Neal scored more than 600 points while averaging 23.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Neal went on to earn D3hoops.com Second Team All-South Region and NABC First Team All-South District honors.
Zaid Harris and Spencer Bone were selected to the ASC All-Freshman Team, while Bone and Ronnie Hamilton garnered ASC West Honorable Mention accolades.
2017-18
In 2017-18, CTX closed the year with a 15-11 overall record and 9-8 mark in ASC play.
The Tornados earned the No. 3 seed in the West Division and advanced to the ASC Tournament for the sixth consecutive season and the 11th time in 12 years.
Ephriam Price and Ben Page earned ASC West Division First Team honors, while Joshua Samuels received honorable mention recognition. Matthew Gregory and Maluw Deng were named to the ASC All-Freshman Team.
Bonewitz also reached a career milestone during the campaign, earning his 200th career victory with a 95-94 win over Sul Ross State on Jan. 25, 2018.
2016-17
In 2016-17, the Tornados finished 19-8 overall and 12-4 in conference play to earn the No. 2 seed in the ASC West Division.
Concordia advanced to the ASC Tournament semifinals before falling to LeTourneau.
The Tornados earned three all-conference awards. Joe Neal was named to the ASC All-Conference and ASC West Division First Teams, Ephriam Price earned Second Team honors and Rashad Coleman received honorable mention recognition.
2015-16
In 2015-16, Concordia finished 15-11 overall and 8-6 in ASC play to earn the No. 3 seed in the West Division.
The Tornados garnered three all-conference honors, including Donovan Ford earning First Team recognition. Rashad Coleman was named to the Second Team, while Ben Page received honorable mention recognition.
Three Tornados were also recognized on the ASC All-Freshman Team, including Ephriam Price, while Payton Brown-Simon, Dervyn Baines and Page earned ASC All-Defensive honors.
2014-15
In 2014-15, Concordia advanced all the way to the ASC Tournament Championship game after posting an 18-10 overall record and 12-8 mark in conference play.
Josh Sanchez and Andre Potts earned ASC Second Team accolades after both averaged more than 17 points per game.
2013-14
In 2013-14, the Tornados posted a 16-10 record and advanced to the ASC Tournament for the seventh time in eight seasons.
Dwayne Patterson and Josh Sanchez both earned First Team All-ASC accolades, while Patterson also collected D3hoops.com Second Team All-South Region honors.
2012-13
In 2012-13, Bonewitz guided Concordia Texas to one of the greatest seasons in program history.
The Tornados won the ASC Tournament Championship for the first time in school history and advanced to their first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament.
Concordia's 87-83 victory over Trinity in the opening round of the NCAA postseason marked the program's first NCAA Tournament victory and sent the Tornados to the Round of 32.
Bonewitz's squad posted a 24-6 overall record, the program's best mark since the 1981-82 campaign. Concordia ranked second in the country by averaging 94 points per game and finished second in the ASC West Division before upsetting the top two seeds en route to the conference tournament championship.
Dwayne Patterson was named the ASC West Division Player of the Year and earned D3hoops.com First Team All-South Region honors.
Prior to Concordia Texas
Prior to his arrival in the Capital City, Bonewitz served as an assistant men's basketball coach at South Plains College in Levelland during the 2003-04 season. He also served as an assistant men's basketball coach at St. Edward's University from 2002-03.
Playing Career
Bonewitz was a decorated collegiate student-athlete at Texas Tech University.
He garnered All-Southwest Conference Freshman Team honors in 1995-96 and earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors two years later.
As a point guard, Bonewitz helped lead the Red Raiders to a 30-2 record, Southwest Conference championship and NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1995-96.
He graduated as Texas Tech's all-time assists leader with 435 career assists, a record he held until John Roberson surpassed the mark during the 2009-10 season.
While being coached by his father at the scholastic level, Bonewitz led San Antonio East Central High School to the 1995 Texas state championship with a perfect 35-0 record. He was named Mr. Texas Basketball that season and was later inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
Personal
A native of San Antonio, Bonewitz graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelor's degree in English and literature in 2000 and earned a master's degree from the same institution in interdisciplinary studies in 2002. He currently resides in Austin.
