Shamika Singleton is Concordia’s Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this winter after leading the women’s basketball program to a 1-1 ledger on its road trip. She averaged 27.0 points per game on 59 percent shooting in addition to adding 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.0 blocks per contest. The junior center’s efforts has put the team in a position to make its first ASC Tournament appearance since the 2004-05 season. She has also helped the Tornados already surpass their overall and conference win totals from last year with six games left on the 2010-11 regular-season schedule.
Despite seeing only 19 minutes of action against Sul Ross State, Singleton was still able to contribute 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting, including 1-1 from long range, as well as eight rebounds, two blocks and one steal in the Tornados' 68-52 Tornado win. Singleton did all she could to keep her team competitive in an 80-68 loss to Howard Payne by registering her eighth double-double of the season. She finished with 31 points, 10 rebounds, a career-best six steals and two blocks. The junior center's 31 points were just one shy of her career high.
Singleton, who ranks in the league's top four in scoring (17.5 ppg), rebounding (9.3 pg) and steals (2.3), is the daughter of Tommy Singleton and Cotina Jones. She has one brother, Tommy (19) and two younger sisters, De'Angela (18) and Tiera (8). Singleton is a computer science major and hopes to become a computer programmer upon graduation from Concordia.
