Freshman midfielder Lena New of the women’s soccer team is the second Taco Bell Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year after leading the program to a 2-0 ledger. She is earning the honor for the first time.
After several close calls against Southwestern and Huston-Tillotson, New found the back of the net twice in the Tornados’ 3-2 come-from-behind win over Austin College on the road. New scored her first career goal in the 56th minute to tie the score at 2-2 before netting another marker just 6:42 later to seal the final outcome. New ended the week leading the team in goals scored (2) and tied for first in total points (4) with Chastity Carrillo, who set up both of the second-half goals scored by New against the ‘Roos.
“Lena stepped up and scored two goals when we needed them,” head coach Corey Holton stated after the squad’s first-ever victory over Austin College in five tries. “She continues to work hard and make things happen offensively.”
New, a kinesiology major from Brownsville, is the daughter of Griselda and Garland. She has one brother, Henry New, and one sister, Priscila Leyva Mayo.
