BOX SCORE

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Concordia University Texas volleyball team was edged in five sets (20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 10-15) by Wiley College in the opening match of the Southwestern University Invitational Friday evening.

Concordia Texas (0-4) won sets two and four, but were unable to hold on to an early fifth set lead as Wiley held off the Tornados to claim the win.

The Tornados were paced offensively by a pair of freshmen, #Ashley Fernandez# and #Amanda Affolter#, who each registered career-highs with double-digit kills.

Fernandez posted 13 kills and hit a game high .500 clip.  Affolter doubled up on her career high for kills after earning 10 in a losing effort against Wiley.

Sophomore libero #Erica Pollack# led the Tornados on the defensive end of the floor by recording 27 digs.

Concordia Texas jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the fifth set, but Wiley battled back to tie the set at 4-4.  A service error by Wiley handed the Tornados a 5-4 lead, however, Wiley reclaimed the lead and the momentum after going up 7-5 and forcing head coach April Birdsong to call a timeout.

Following CTX's timeout, Wiley pushed the lead to 13-6.  The Tornados reeled off three straight points and moved within 13-9.  However, Wiley would go on to clinch the match on a kill that landed in the heart of the Tornados' defense.

The Tornados will return to action Saturday with two more matches at the Southwestern Invitational.  CTX will take on the host Pirates at 2 p.m., followed by Huston-Tillotson University at 4 p.m.  Both matches will again be featured on the live video feed hosted by Southwestern.
