GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Concordia University Texas volleyball team was swept by No. 20 Southwestern Saturday afternoon at the Southwestern University Invitational. The Tornados were held to a .054 hitting percentage by the Pirates' stout defensive efforts.
The Tornados battled in all three sets but eventually were swept by the host Pirates (5-3).
Senior #Carrie Fisk# and sophomore #Kalynn White# each recorded six kills to lead the Tornados offensively. Sophomore #Haley Phillips# posted 14 assists, while sophomore #Erica Pollack# (pictured, above) tallied nine digs for CTX.
In the first set, Southwestern moved out to an 18-9 lead over CTX before the young Tornados stormed back to pull within one, 22-21. Fisk aided the Tornados' comeback by leading Concordia Texas with a run of several great serves. The Pirates, however, would pull away to hang on to a 25-21 first-set win.
The second set again saw the Tornados hang tough as both teams battled back-and-forth early with Southwestern holding an 8-7 advantage. The Pirates would push the lead to 22-13 before Concordia Texas again mounted a comeback, pulling within seven points (23-16). Southwestern would score the final two points of the set to increase their match lead to 2-0.
The Pirates' momentum carried into the third set as Southwestern jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. Southwestern continued to cruise in the third set and led by as much as 11 points (20-9) before finally putting the Tornados away with a 25-16 victory.
The Tornados will look to bounce back and pick up a win in the final match of the tournament as they take on Huston-Tillotson University at 4 p.m. The Tornados' final game of the tournament will again be featured on the live video feed by Southwestern.
