Volleyball Falls Twice in Tournament

Kalynn White Earns All-Tournament Honors

The Concordia Texas volleyball team fell twice Saturday at the University of Dallas Tournament, hosted by Austin College.  The Tornados were defeated by Hendrix College, 3-2, and Austin College, 3-0, in the nightcap.

The Tornados (0-3) fell in five sets (26-24, 25-23, 10-25, 21-25, 13-15) to the Warriors (1-4).

Concordia held a 2-0 lead after winning the first set, 26-24, and the second set, 25-23.  However, the Warriors mounted a comeback, winning the next two sets, 25-10 and 25-21, before claiming the match with a 15-13 decision in the final set.

Sophomore #Kalynn White# posted a career-high 11 kills in the loss for Concordia.  White also recorded a team-best four block assists.

Senior #Carrie Fisk# tallied nine kills in the first match of the day, while sophomore #Haley Phillips# earned a career-high 33 assists.  Sophomore #Erica Pollack# posted a career-best 36 digs for the Tornados.

In the nightcap, Concordia dropped a three-set decision to the host Kangaroos (17-25, 12-25, 15-25).

"We were right there in all three sets," said Concordia head coach April Birdsong.  "They capitalized on our errors and went on big runs in each set."

White again led Concordia with seven kills against Austin College. 

Freshman setter #Bianca Martinez# set a career-high with 16 assists.

White was named to the all-tournament team for Concordia after recording 18 kills in two matches.

Austin College (5-1), who is receiving votes in the preseason AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, won the tournament after posting a perfect 4-0 record in the two-day event.

Concordia will return to action next week at the Southwestern University Invitational in Georgetown. The Tornados are scheduled to play Wiley College Fri., Sept. 11 at 5:00 p.m.  Concordia will play a pair of matches on Sat., Sept. 12 against Southwestern and Huston-Tillotson University at 2 and 4 p.m.
